Photograph Comments

Photograph comments can be synchronised between Lightroom Classic (LrC) and Piwigo. The synchronisation mechanism operates as follows.

Prerequisites

Comments must be activated on the Piwigo host:

Administration → Configuration → Comments

Piwigo Comment Model

Comments are associated with a specific Photograph and album on the Piwigo host (referred to as a published collection in LrC). As a result, the same photograph published to multiple albums will have a separate and independent set of comments in each album.

The Piwigo host is the authoritative source for comments associated with a photograph/album. LrC does not maintain comments independently; instead, it stores a local mirror of the comments retrieved from Piwigo.

When a new comment is added to a photograph in LrC, it is immediately uploaded to Piwigo. The latest complete list of comments for that photograph/album is then downloaded from Piwigo and displayed in the LrC Comments panel.

When a new comment is added to a photograph in Piwigo, it does not appear in LrC until a synchronisation happens.

Comments cannot be edited or deleted in LrC.

Adding a Comment

On adding a new comment, as soon as enter is pressed, or the comment entry field loses focus, the plugin uploads the comment to the corresponding photograph on Piwigo. Due to the anti-spam operation of the Piwigo Comments mechanism there is often a delay of 2 or 3 seconds before the 'Comment added to Piwigo' message appears. This is normal.

Default Synchronisation Behaviour

By default, LrC downloads comments for a photograph in the following situations:

  1. For every photograph in the published collection whenever any photograph in that collection is published or re-published.
  2. When the user clicks the Refresh button in the Library module’s Comments panel, all photographs in the selected collection will be synchronised.
  3. After the user adds a new comment to a photograph in the Library module’s Comments panel, that comments for that photograph will be synchronised.

Optional Synchronisation Settings

Downloading comments for all photographs during every publish operation could have a noticeable performance impact for large collections, particularly when the connection to the Piwigo host is relatively slow.

To address this, the plugin provides optional settings that modify the comment synchronisation behavior. By default, the plugin behaves as described above. The following options are available in the Lightroom Publishing Manager panel under Other Settings.

Synchronise comments as part of a Publish Process

  • Enabled (default):
Comment synchronisation occurs during publish and re-publish operations.
  • Disabled:
Comments are no longer synchronised as part of the publish process. Instead, comment downloads occur only when:
    • The Refresh button is clicked in the Library module’s Comments panel, or
    • A new comment is added in the Library module’s Comments panel.

Only include Published Photos

  • When enabled, only the photographs actually published during the current publish operation have their comments synchronised.
  • When disabled, comments for all photographs in the published collection are synchronised during a publish operation.
  • This option is only available when Synchronise comments as part of a Publish Process is enabled. If that option is disabled, this setting has no effect.
