What's New

  • Added support for new software versions released in April 2026.
  • Added support for the new software version which is exclusive to Libra 2 (released in March).
  • Blacklisted patches can now be checked and attempted for patching, but they are now marked as "known to fail".
  • Updated some 4.45.x patches for improved compatibility with newer Kobo devices.
  • Updated testing strategy robustness and upgraded dependencies to fix security issues.

Full Changelog: v1.7...v1.8

How to use

You can use the Web UI via this website. I highly recommend using the NickelMenu path and not using custom patches, as it is much safer and will normally persist between updates (until Kobo release v5.x of their system software). If you use custom patches, this will require re-patching after system software updates are installed.

For more information, please follow the steps in the wizard on the website and carefully read the instructions and warnings.

What's New

  • Ensure that the ExcludeSyncFolders value does not exclude the calibre folder by default, unless you enable the new optional feature that does exclude that folder.
  • The ExcludeSyncFolders config line is always updated on-device if you connect your Kobo to ensure it's always correct.
  • Added "Prevent Calibre books from appearing in My Books" as an optional tweak when selecting the NickelMenu preset.
  • Fixed a bug where an empty panel would be displayed when only removing NickelMenu with no additional extra removals.

Full Changelog: v1.6...v1.7

What's Supported

This version of KoboPatch WebUI supports two specific paths:

  • Installing NickelMenu with or without a custom configuration. Works for most Kobo devices.
  • Applying and installing custom patches. Only supported for a limited amount of devices right now.

If you are using Chrome or a Chrome-based browser with the filesystem API, you can even have the webpage put the patches in the right place on your device! Super convenient.

Tip

Before using the tool, make a backup of the contents of your e-reader, just to be safe. You can also restore the original firmware and uninstall NickelMenu via this tool, and I've included a link to this page which tells you how to manually reset your device if something goes catastrophically wrong.

You can use the Web UI here.

I highly recommend using the NickelMenu path, as it is much safer and will normally persist between updates (until Kobo release v5.x of their system software). Manual patches will require re-patching after system software updates, which is a bit annoying.

If you like to live dangerously, I suppose you could use custom patches -- but those are limited to Kobo Libra Colour, Kobo Clara Colour and Kobo Clara BW because I didn't want to maintain more than one list of patches for this project at this time.

KoboPatch WebUI 1.6

What's New

  • Added support for older Kobo devices running software version 4.38.
  • Patches known to fail on certain firmware versions are now labeled as "not compatible" and disabled.
  • Helpful instructions are shown when connecting your device for the first time.
  • Pressing "Connect" now properly resets previously loaded patches and manual mode state, preventing stale data from carrying over between sessions if you change your mind on whether to do things automatically or manually.

KoboPatch WebUI 1.5

What's New

  • You now have more control over specific NickelMenu features, and that flow has been slightly updated: a separate step now exists for picking which customizations you want to apply.
  • Added a notice for users on iPhone or iPad which explains why they cannot directly connect to the device via the browser.
  • Updated analytics disclaimer and configuration for the hosted version.
  • Updated the footer with more useful links and a link to the feedback post in Discussions here on GitHub.
  • Preliminary testing has been done to embed this version into an Electron wrapper for a downloadable desktop. This may be coming in the future, depending on how popular the "direct transfer to Kobo" feature is.

KoboPatch WebUI v1.4

What's New

  • You can now install KOReader when you select "Install NickelMenu and customize".
  • Improved instructions for manually installing a downloaded .zip file.
  • If you choose to uninstall NickelMenu, you will have the option to clean up other features they were installed alongside NickelMenu, like KOReader, the Readerly fonts, etc.
  • You can now see how many files still need to be copied when you choose "Write to Kobo". This is mostly relevant for KOReader, because you need to transfer a lot of files for that.
  • Added some more information and tweaked text copy in various places.
  • Added a privacy policy if analytics is enabled.
  • Updated the footer with additional links.
