a few options:

• find some way to allow for the action to merge to main, despite the branch protection rule (seems hard)
• use another branch to host badges (does not seem possible: https://github.com/jpb06/jest-badges-action)

So do you think adding a personal access token in github secrets would work? Then adding the ref to the checkout action?

I don't think so.

I got the checkout and merge behavior to work, but the action cannot push to a branch with protection, and it did not seem to recognize if you switch branches in the middle of the action.

I was gonna ask the action author if they have a better workaround now.

Perhaps simplest approach is to maintain a branch off main and use that branch to manage badges, and keep it updated with cron...

Ok, let's remove the badges for now, and we can revisit when we have a something working (e.g., if the action author comes up with a workaround that minimizes adhoc work here).
